Watermelon Tips

To select a great watermelon, pick it up. It should feel heavy for its size because watermelons are 92% water.

  • Look for a creamy yellow “sun spot” on the bottom of your watermelon. This shows where the watermelon sat in the sun to ripen.
  • You can cook and pickle the white part of the rind to take advantage of the whole fruit – no waste! Here’s a tasty Watermelon Rind chutney idea that pairs well with grilled meat.
  • As time passes, the sugars in watermelon will start turning starchy (that’s how it gets that mealy texture), so be sure to eat your watermelon sooner rather than later.
  • Watermelon is an original and tasty substitution for tomatoes on sandwichesand salads – adding colour, moisture and natural sweetness.
