Ontario Apple Stuffed French Toast
Raisin bread is sweetened and usually cinnamon flavoured, ideal for this breakfast favourite. However other breads can be used (see tip below). Serve this apple sandwich with maple syrup.

Ingredients
Servings
- 8 Slices Stale Raisin Bread
- 1/4 Cup Spreadable Cream Cheese
- 2 Ontario Apples (Empire or McIntosh), Thinly Sliced
- 3 Eggs
- 3/4 Cup Milk
- 2 Tbsp. Butter
- To Taste Ontario Maple Syrup
Instructions
Step 1
Spread one side of each slice of raisin bread with cream cheese. Top 4 slices of bread with a layer of apple slices. Top with remaining slices of bread to make sandwiches.Step 2
Whisk eggs; add milk and vanilla and whisk until smooth. Pour into a shallow dish large enough to hold 1 sandwich.Step 3
In a large non-stick skillet, melt butter over medium heat.Step 4
Dip a sandwich into egg mixture, turning to soak – don’t oversoak.Step 5
Add 2 sandwiches to skillet and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Repeat with remaining sandwiches. Cut in half and serve with maple syrup.
If using an egg or plain bread, add 2 tbsp (25 mL) granulated or brown sugar to egg mixture.
Stale bread is ideal for French toast as fresh bread absorbs too much liquid, making it soggy.
