The Ultimate Guide to Ontario Apple Picking Season

September and October is prime apple season in Ontario, and apple picking is the quintessential fall activity.

Apple picking in Ontario makes a great weekend activity, and there are many ‘pick-your-own’ orchards to choose from. Whether you’re an apple-picking pro, or it’s your first time, being prepared will ensure you have the best time possible.

What to Wear

Before heading out for your apple picking adventure, be sure to check the weather. The temperature can vary widely this time of year, so it’s best to check the day-of to know what to expect. It’s important to dress comfortably while also dressing for the weather. Keep in mind you may be walking and standing for extended periods of time, so you’ll want to ensure you wear comfortable shoes. Close-toed shoes or rubber boots might be the best choice since the ground may be muddy, grassy or uneven.

What to Bring

Consider bringing a few items to make the best of your experience. The orchard may supply bags or baskets for your apples, but if not, be sure to bring your own. If you plan on making a whole day of it (some orchards have activities for kids, and markets to shop), bringing water, snacks, and a blanket may be a good idea. And if the weather is warm and sunny, don’t forget a hat and sunscreen. Different orchards may have different payment options, so it might be worth doing some research to see if you need to bring debit, cash, or a credit card. And lastly, but possibly most importantly, bring a camera or your phone to take pictures of your apple picking adventure.

The Best Apples to Pick

There are 15 main apple varieties grown in Ontario. They differ in their taste profile – sweet, tart, crisp, juicy, etc – as well as the best way to use them.

Most apples are perfect for eating fresh or out of hand. They are typically crisp, juicy, and very flavourful. Look for Gala, Ambrosia, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, and Empire.

If you want apples to use for baking, you’ll want varieties that are firm and hold their shape in the oven. Good options for baking are Ambrosia, Honeycrisp, McIntosh, Cortland, Northern Spy, or Idared.

If you’re searching for apples to make apple pie, ideally choose Northern Spy, Honeycrisp, or Cortland.

How to Use All Those Apples!

Once you’re home with all your apples, you may need some inspiration for how to use them. You’ll likely be eating some fresh, adding to salads, or making apple pie, but here are some other recipes that use apples in fun and unique ways:

To keep your apples fresh for as long as possible, store them in a perforated plastic bag in your fridge’s crisper. The cold, humid environment helps them stay crisp, juicy, and full of flavour.

With the right clothing and a plan in place, apple picking is a fun fall tradition to enjoy with family or friends. There’s nothing better than local Ontario produce, and picking your own apples is as close to the action as you can possibly get.
